Soda

It was the delights of firing with salt that first lured me away from tin glaze. Whilst living in America in the ‘nineties I had a chance to build a kiln in the back field with a group of potters more experienced in kiln building than me; notably Chris Bonner and Katharine Hackl. We had some nice results with oribe and copper glazes – but after only five firings we, sadly, returned to England. Back in Oxfordshire, I built a kiln – with Rob Molyneux – along the lines of Ruthanne Tudball’s kiln designed by Joe Finch. We fired it with soda and had some good results. But it was far too big for me and I was too busy working with shino to fire it. I dismantled it two years ago and stored all the materials. I am including images of some of the pots I made with salt/soda as I have an intention soon to build a smaller version of Joe’s kiln in a nearby field. One of the advantages of this is that pots fired with salt/soda that don’t ‘sing’ ( and there are always some) can be refired in the anagama with really magical results. So I hope that in the next year or so I will be able to post pictures of a kiln and some new pots.
